Weston Mill Community Primary School: Coverage of the National Curriculum.
At Weston Mill Community Primary School we follow the National Curriculum, as set out by the government. This curriculum has been designed by the staff to engage children in their learning, through various topics, whilst ensuring that the National Curriculum objectives are covered by the end of KS1 and KS2.
Topics are developed to ensure that children's learning develops through a range of carefully thought out lessons, activities and opportunities, which could involve off site visits or guest visitors to the school.
Homework is linked to the topic, so children can further develop their knowledge, skills and understanding, and this is shared with the class.
In addition to this programme, the KS2 children also have a languages lesson, which in our school is Spanish. We also, over the year, give every class an opportunity to make learning links in Forest Schools , and this provides the children with opportunities to work outdoors safely with alternative materials and resources that are linked to their current unit of work. This has proven to be a really successful development in the learning that the children undertake within their time with us at school.
All children have PE slots through the week, and this is enhanced with outdoor PE leads coming in to support us in various activities. In addition to this swimming lessons take place to ensure that children can swim 25m (as stated in the National Curriculum) by the end of KS2.
At times, the school may have a focus for the whole day or week, where the school is working towards developing initiatives and understanding in other areas of their lives, such as PSHE, Healthy Living, E Safety. We also look to support and work as part of the community by celebrating and raising money for local and national charities, which happen throughout the year.
To develop Phonics within the school we have adopted the Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme, which has been working very well within our school, and for Mathematics the school now follows the White Rose Hub, allowing children to secure concepts and deepen their learning through mastery maths. Please see the documents below for more information.
Creatively, all children are encouraged to take their own learning forward, be proactive in asking questions, and find out new information independently which can then be shared.
Learning is shared and celebrated through individual achievements and team points, class assemblies, and WOW days. Star learners for the week get a special message sent home to their parents in the post. The school newsletter also keeps everyone up to date with success and achievements within the school.
